The Upper Cape YMCA is currently in the design phase and will bring much needed YMCA programs to the Falmouth area. SV Design worked closely with the Upper Cape YMCA board to bring their vision to life and designed this facility with aquatic program space, a wellness center, group exercise areas, youth and play spaces, locker rooms, administrative offices, and multi-purpose spaces to provide the community with programs for healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility.
There were two main design principles that formed the basis of the YMCA design: first and most importantly, it had to feel local. They wanted the building to belong to the community in every sense, and for this sense of belonging to be reflected in its architecture. Secondly, they required a creative and thoughtfully designed facility that would engage current YMCA members and also draw new members in. SV Design accomplished this with a dramatic entry and lobby design that is striking from the site entry point with a long-distance view of the building up the walkway, and also through details as one approaches and enters the building. Angled wooden columns frame the entry, floor to ceiling windows invite members in, and traditional Cape Cod shingling connects the building to its local roots.
“We’re extremely excited to be moving forward with this step in selecting SV Design,” said Stacie Peugh, president and CEO of the YMCA Cape Cod. “Out of a great pool of possible architects, we were extremely pleased with SV Design’s past work experience, specifically their work with YMCA designs in Massachusetts.”
