The Haven Project & Harborlight Homes: Catalyst
Lynn, Massachusetts

Working with The Haven Project and Harborlight Homes, the 3rd and 4th floors of the historic William Henry Hutchinson – Charles Clark Block (the Block) building located on Munroe Street in Lynn were renovated to create a live-in resident manager studio and 23 studio apartments for 18-24 year olds who were previously unhoused.

Amenities include a community room, laundry room, and kitchenette. A small entry and lobby addition was also designed to allow separate access to the new apartments. SV Design worked closely with the Historic Commission to ensure the building was eligible for tax credits, and that the windows and brick façade remained in line with the building’s historic aesthetic.

Constructed in 1895, the Block features a classical arched facade of light buff brick and carved Ohio sandstone trim, and is a contributing building in the Munroe Street Historic District, listed to the National Register in 1976. The energy efficiency of the brick walls and wood framed roof were of particular focus for this building. Replacement windows were installed to increase efficiency while maintaining the historic character. Although small, the units feel spacious and bright with their large windows and tall ceilings. This project will be Energy Star Certified.
