A Historic Boathouse Reimagined: The Journey of 90 Bridge Street
The renovation of the historic boathouse at 90 Bridge Street marks a significant milestone for the Chatham community. Originally constructed in the 1930s, this storied structure has witnessed numerous transformations, having been relocated multiple times across Massachusetts. Now, it embarks on a new chapter, merging history with modern sustainability.
The boathouse has a rich history that reflects the maritime heritage of Chatham. Originally located in Stage Harbor, it has been transported across the state through five barged moves: from Chatham to Quincy, then to Hull, back to Quincy, on to New Bedford, and finally returning to its roots in Chatham. This unique journey has made the boathouse not just a physical structure but a symbol of resilience and community connection.
SV Design initially began the project in 2020 as a new build, aiming to create a facility with five upweller tanks and one raceway ball for shellfish cultivation. However, it was soon realized that the new structure would be similar in size to the existing historic boathouse. This insight shifted the focus to a historical renovation, aligning with the growing emphasis on sustainable aquaculture while honoring its historical elements. A notable feature of the original structure was its floor with embedded railroad tracks, which facilitated boat launches. While this specific feature will not be retained, the renovation will incorporate elements that celebrate the boathouse's legacy.
One of the most exciting aspects of the renovation is the commitment to community accessibility. The surrounding dock and pier will be open to the public, allowing residents and visitors to engage with the waterway and learn about shellfish cultivation. Additionally, the design will feature two large garage doors, inviting the public to peek inside and witness the innovative work being done.
The project is set to commence shellfish cultivation in the Spring of 2027, further enhancing Chatham's reputation as a hub for sustainable seafood practices. The renovated boathouse will not only serve as a facility for aquaculture but will also become a focal point for education and community involvement.
The renovation of the historic boathouse at 90 Bridge Street is a testament to the blend of history and innovation. As it transforms into a modern facility for shellfish cultivation, it will continue to serve as a reminder of Chatham's rich maritime history while fostering a sustainable future for the community.
