SV Design recently worked with the Greater Beverly YMCA on a fully gut-renovated community locker room and renovations to the existing women’s and men’s locker rooms in the Sterling Center. The renovation allows the locker room spaces to provide expanded offerings and universal amenities by utilizing space from the underused girls’ and boys’ locker rooms.

The design of the new locker room spaces responds to the most current and best practices of design and construction for locker rooms, and the finishes and construction techniques maximize durability and longevity throughout the wet and dry spaces.

Key trends in innovative universal locker room design that were applied to the Sterling YMCA spaces include amplified convenience with an increased number of sinks, changing spaces, showers, and toilets, along with enhanced traffic flow to reduce congestion and ensure a safe environment, especially for members moving between the wet pool and drier areas of the locker room. Additionally, the state-of-the-art, ADA-compliant design fosters an environment that embraces diversity and inclusivity.

With privacy being of utmost importance as these spaces serve people of all ages and genders, fully-enclosed bathrooms and changing rooms feature full-height walls and doors in lieu of being constructed with thick plastic partitions to create stalls. Open areas are used for activities such as grooming, storing belongings, and changing shoes.
