Upon purchasing this mid-century ranch house for their summer home, the new owners hired SV Design to help them plan smart renovations to the property. Their primary goals were to open the existing spaces; add more usable living areas; brighten the interior; rethink landscaping; and upgrade outdated systems. SV worked closely with the clients to establish a solid plan from the start, creating a two-phased approach that would allow the family to enjoy the summer months in their new home, without disruption. This also offered the owners the opportunity to disperse the construction budget over a longer period.
The new Great Room, with a cathedral ceiling, makes for a surprising twist as one enters this ranch-style home. Custom cabinetry with special details, such as wood planks on the island etched to match the wave pattern of the backsplash tile, was a worthwhile investment — as it is the area that is most often used and greets guests as they walk in the front door. The existing garage was repurposed to become a new family room with direct access to the landscaped backyard and enlarged patio. The side entry, connecting the family room to the main house, was reconfigured to create a mudroom with laundry and accommodate a full bath. We replaced fixtures and finishes throughout the home, installed an energy-efficient HVAC system; and enhanced entries with stone stoops and paths. The result is the transformation of a 1965-era ranch into a modern home with charming curb appeal.
