The original 1850’s home had a very traditional segmented floor plan, outdated utilities and services, and found itself sitting on a non-conforming lot. The clients, with their growing children, were looking for a more functional home with open gathering spaces and private hideaways. Likewise, refreshing the finishes, updating the utilities and implementing modern technologies into the existing structure was part of the challenge on this project.
The project goals included opening the main living spaces for family gathering. Encompassed in these spaces were the entry sequesnce, kitchen, living room, and the new family room above the garage. An everyday entry was created in the new connector between the garage and main house that includes a proper mudroom space with individual cubbies for each family member. The second floor was reorganized and a small addition was added to house the master bathroom and closet. New bathrooms were incorporated at each bedroom creating junior hideaways for the children. The garage was added as well as the gym space and junior suite above.
The landscape was developed as a retreat from everyday tensions. The geometric organization creates defined landing spots for relaxation in the modestly sized yard. The plantings, fountain, outdoor fireplace pool and spa were strategically placed to block out the outside world for an everyday tranquil experience.
